Thanksgiving teaching thoughts

It's always tough to take time off for a vacation right before the end of the semester--we all tend to lose momentum as a result. On the other hand, I've been feeling out of sorts most of this month, with a cold that keeps hanging on and now pain in my left hip that extends down to my ankle--think it's sciatica problems (again). So I'm grateful for the break because of that. I hope I'll get better before the last week of classes starts next week.

We're doing presentations in First-Year Writing on our archival projects right now. I mentioned before how interesting it has been to learn about what students have been working on most of the semester. In addition to that, it's been inspiring to see what directions they're taking the final projects in. I've given them pretty much free rein on how they present their findings, so in their presentations we've seen a variety of genres. Some students are writing academic research essays, but others are writing explainer articles or op-eds for a more general audience, some are working on podcasts, some are creating posters, and a couple of people are even writing short stories (historical fiction) based on their research. It has been fun to hear about their projects and make suggestions for revision; I admit that it's harder to give feedback on short stories as opposed to academic essays, but I've tried to step up to that challenge!

Two more days of presentations coming up after the holiday. So far I've been impressed with the students' work, and I hope they appreciate each other's projects as well!
