(My favorite lines from people opposed to the speed cameras: "Tickets will go to faceless recipients in an unwarranted exploitation of rights." And "This is Orwellian, and it limits personal freedom." Folks, these are about speed cameras for in front of schools. No one's talking about limiting your personal "right" to drive 100 mph on 83...)

Yeah, but if people start paying attention to speed limit signs at schools, they might start paying attention to them on other local roads, and then they might start noticing them on highways, and then the BW-Parkway would grind to a [relative] halt.....

Perish the thought...

I don't speed (or even drive that often since I walk almost everywhere now).

BUT, what gets my goat is that there's no risk of kids getting mowed over in most of these school zones. Why? Well, the schools are set WWWAAAAAAYYYYY the heck back from the road, and the kids are bussed or driven everywhere. They don't even venture out near the road. So, I guess I don't get why speeds are restricted in front of EVERY school. They should be established on a case-by-case basis.

The article does mention, "The county would place cameras at about a dozen undetermined schools and operate them from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. weekdays. Those exceeding the speed limit by 12 mph or more would receive a $40 citation but no points on their driving records." So it would be on a case-by-case basis, I guess.

To be fair to the people against this policy, they also characterize the way that this is being set up (contracting out the speed cameras to an outside firm) as a "cash grab." And they also argue that they'd like to see more evidence for need. (I just wish they'd left Orwell out of their arguments.)
